Texas House Speaker Joe Straus re-appointed Representative Byron Cook (R-Corsicana) to serve as chair of the House Committee on State Affairs for the fourth consecutive legislative session.

Cook said, "It is an honor to once again have the opportunity to serve as chair of the House Committee on State Affairs. Recognizing the importance of the legislation that this committee considers, I take the appointment by Speaker Straus extremely seriously, as the bills that come through the committee have the potential to affect everyday lives of countless Texans."

Cook has served on the committee since 2003 and as its chair since 2011.

"Chairman Cook will continue to provide strong leadership on one of the most important committees in the Texas House. As the Chairman of the State Affairs Committee, he is well-positioned to address his community`s priorities and help shape the House`s approach to major issues," remarked Speaker Straus.

In his 2017 State of the State address, the governor named four emergency items to the 85th Legislature, including: reforming Child Protective Services, banning sanctuary cities, implementing meaningful ethics reforms and passing a resolution calling for a Convention of States. Three of these items could potentially be referred to the House Committee on State Affairs for public input and consideration.

Cook will also serve again as a member of the House Calendars Committee, which controls the placement and flow of bills within the Texas House, throughout the legislative process.

"It is a privilege and honor to be entrusted with the responsibility of chairing such an influential committee," Cook said. "I will continue to work diligently to ensure that legislation receives full consideration and that we advance good public policy that contributes to furthering the prosperity of Texas."
