House Speaker Joe Straus re-appointed Representative Byron Cook
(R-Corsicana) to serve as chair of the House Committee on State
Affairs for the fourth consecutive legislative session.

serve as chair of the House Committee on State Affairs. Recognizing
the importance of the legislation that this committee considers, I
take the appointment by Speaker Straus extremely seriously, as the
bills that come through the committee have the potential to affect
everyday lives of countless Texans."
has served on the committee since 2003 and as its chair since 2011.
Cook will continue to provide strong leadership on one of the most
important committees in the Texas House. As the Chairman of the
State Affairs Committee, he is well-positioned to address his
community`s priorities and help shape the House`s approach to major
issues," remarked Speaker Straus.
his 2017 State of the State address, the governor named four
emergency items to the 85th Legislature, including: reforming Child
Protective Services, banning sanctuary cities, implementing
meaningful ethics reforms and passing a resolution calling for a
Convention of States. Three of these items could potentially be
referred to the House Committee on State Affairs for public input and
will also serve again as a member of the House Calendars Committee,
which controls the placement and flow of bills within the Texas
House, throughout the legislative process.
