Thursday, July 2 - A free drive-thru COVID-19 testing site from 10 am to 4 pm at Rice Middle School, 1402 SW McKinney St. in Rice. The test is free of charge to those who have symptoms or have been around others who have been ill with COVID-19 symptoms. Saturday, July 4 - The Commemorative Air Force's (CAF) Coyote Squadron, based at C. David Campbell Airfield (KCRS) in Corsicana, will participate in a Fourth of July flyover to honor America's Independence Day. The flyover will start at Corsicana (KCRS) and then fly over Richland at 10:17 am, Dawson at 10:33 am, Frost at 10:41 am, Blooming Grove at 10:45 am, Barry at 10:48 am, Emhouse at 10:51 am, Rice at 10:55 am, Corsicana at 11:02 am, Powell at 11:07 am, Kerens at 11:11 am, Richland Creek Reservoir at 11:16 am, and then return to the airport (KCRS) at 11:23 am. The timing of this event will coincide with the Blooming Grove 4th of July parade.

UPDATE: The activities for kids, food & beverage vendors, CFD Fire House, bounce house & slide and live music have been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The fireworks display will start at 9:25 pm for citizens to enjoy from their vehicles. Please observe the following: park your car in a safe location and view the fireworks from your favorite spot. Do not gather in close proximity to other groups or at the park pavilion or playground. Spread out and maintain as much distance as possible from others. Saturday, July 18 - A special benefit fish fry and auction benefiting the family of the late Charles Paul has been scheduled at the Kerens Volunteer Fire Department. Paul passed away last month and the medical expenses prior to his death were extensive, and have caused a huge financial hardship for the family. Paul, a longtime sheriff's deputy, had just been elected Constable of Precinct 2 for Navarro County and was to take office next January. The fundraising event for the family will include an auction and dinner, with food served from 6 to 8 pm at $10 per plate. Volunteer fire departments are in need of water. Residents in the community and businesses are asked to donate bottled water. The firefighters at volunteer fire departments are not paid. Water is a big necessity because the risk of dehydration can affect firefighters while working in extreme heat.

If you have an unserviceable US, state, M.I.A., or military flag, bring it to the American Legion, 632 N. Beaton St. If the post is closed, you can place the flag in a plastic bag and hang it on the front door. After 2 pm daily, bring it inside. If you can not afford a new US flag, the American Legion will replace your unserviceable US flag with a new US Flag. Honor Flight DFW is a 501c(3) non-profit organization that is committed to flying veterans, at no cost to the veteran, round trip to Washington, DC with a one night stay, to see the WW II Memorial and other monuments in the Washington area. They will fly any veteran of a War era since WW II, but priority is for WW II and terminally ill veterans. They have a "guardian" assigned to each veteran to assist him or her during the trip and a volunteer medical staff for each flight.
