Mayor Don Denbow comments on council support of tax abatements for new industry:

The City Council’s agenda on the first meeting of 2018 included three possible tax abatements requested by a new business to the City, a business expanding production, and a new retail location.

Dart Container Corporation plans to occupy the former Home Depot Warehouse’s 1.5 million square feet of space for a $38 million investment, bringing 40 jobs to Corsicana.  Headquartered in Mason, Michigan, Dart Container Corporation develops, manufactures and distributes innovative foodservice packaging solutions, with cups, plates, containers, lids and straws made from such materials as expanded polystyrene foam, solid polystyrene, polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate (PET), paper and sugar cane.  Dart operates in more than 40 locations in six countries, with about 15,000 employees worldwide.

The expansion of PACTIV’s footprint plans to invest $30 million and create 30 additional jobs.  Pactiv is the world’s largest manufacturer and distributor of food packaging and foodservice products, supplying packers, processors, supermarkets, restaurants, institutions and foodservice outlets across North America.  The product lines include custom and stock foam, plastic, aluminum, pressed-paperboard, PE coated board, and molded-fiber packaging.  Founded in 1965, the company provides products to every major foodservice retailer and distributor in North America.

In Historic Downtown, Changing of the Garden, a boutique English garden center specializing in antique roses, native Texas plants and unique specimen plants, opened in 2016 at 222 North Main Street in a former service station after extensive renovation.

“Any time a small city has the opportunity to encourage almost $70 million in investments and create almost 100 new jobs is welcome news.  Companies are choosing Corsicana because of our attractive pro-business programs and the quality of life we provide our residents,” noted Mayor Don Denbow.

The City has established a tax abatement program to encourage economic development.  In order to be considered for tax abatement, a project must meet several criteria pertaining to job creation and property tax evaluation.  Generally, projects are eligible for a tax abatement of up to 50% for a period of 10 years.  The value of abatements for the tax year 2017 was $217,778.
